The Mesoamerican Alliance of Peoples and Forests (AMPB) will hold the first Mesoamerican Climate Week in Panama City, from June 13 to 16, 2023. The event will bring together around 80 leaders of Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities from Mexico to Panama to present their territorial experiences of climate resilience and defense of water and biological resources and cultural diversity.
During the week, the AMPB will address transcendental issues for the region, including carbon markets. In addition, we will share the results of a new report, Who Owns the World’s Land?: Second Edition, which will be the most comprehensive and up-to-date picture of global progress toward legal recognition of indigenous peoples’ land tenure, Afro-descendants and local communities, sustainable productive alternatives and direct investment in the communities, since financing is scarce. Also, spaces for dialogue will be sought with political authorities in the region, NGOs, donors and other civil society organizations. As recognized at the last COP15, the contribution, rights, and participation of IPLCs in decision-making is essential to achieve climate change and global biodiversity.
During the event, the AMPB will present its first territorial direct investment tool in Mesoamerica built by and for Indigenous Peoples and local communities. The Mesoamerican Territorial Fund (FTM) seeks to support the sustainable development and capacities of local territorial partners, especially Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities (PICL), who are recognized worldwide as the guardians of forests and biodiversity.
The Mesoamerican Climate Week will be a unique opportunity to learn about the territorial experiences of climate resilience and defense of water and the biological and cultural diversity of the Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities of the region.
