The President of the Republic, Laurentino Cortizo Cohen held a meeting this morning with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of India, Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, with whom he discussed issues of trade between the two countries, technology and the pharmaceutical industry, among others.
It is the first time in 60 years of diplomatic relations that a foreign minister from India visits Panama. India is considered the world’s largest democracy and fifth largest global economy.
During the meeting, President Cortizo Cohen and the Indian Foreign Minister discussed the desire to make an alliance with the Indian pharmaceutical industry, to achieve quality, effective and cheaper medicines for Panamanians, the goal of the current administration.
In addition, they discussed the commercial exchange between Panama and India and the advantages that our country offers for the establishment of more companies; also about the opportunities for cooperation, and our interest in developing a center of technological excellence and innovation.
India became the fifth largest economy in the world in 2022 by experiencing tremendous economic growth. The populous Asian country displaced the United Kingdom to sixth place as an economic powerhouse.
India is surpassed as an economic power only by the United States, China, Japan and Germany. Wheat and rice are its main agricultural items and oil products, pharmaceuticals, electronics, textiles and clothing, among other manufactures, stand out.
This month, according to the latest United Nations projections, India became the world’s most populous country with 1.428 million people, surpassing China.
At the meeting, President Cortizo Cohen was accompanied by Chancellor Janaina Tewaney: the administrator of the Government Innovation Authority, Luis Oliva and Saleh Asvat, secretary of the Public Private Association.
