The High Court of Islamabad granted this Friday (12.05.2023) freedom on bail for two weeks to former Prime Minister Imran Khan, a day after the Supreme Court of Pakistan described the detention of the opposition leader as “illegal”, which led to a wave of violence with thousands of supporters demanding his release.
A chamber of two judges granted this measure to the former president, accused of a corruption case, in a hearing of several hours held under a heavy security operation in the city, according to Pakistani television Ary TV.
The trial was held one day after the Supreme Court declared Khan’s arrest “illegal” and ordered the High Court today to hear the former president’s bail request, which will allow him to leave the courthouse free.
Khan’s formation, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), announced on Friday a peaceful demonstration by his supporters in Islamabad, which the former prime minister was expected to join if released, but severe security measures imposed in the capital prevented the movement of many of his followers, according to what the party itself stated on Twitter.
The 70-year-old politician was arrested on May 9 by the security forces in a corruption case when he went to the Islamabad High Court to request bail for one of several cases brought against him.
Khan was arrested for “the Qadir Trust case”, which accuses him of having received land cas a bribe, through a fund created by him and his wife for a university focused on spirituality and Islamic teachings.
His arrest led to a wave of violence in many parts of the country, which included attacks on military headquarters, state institutions and officers’ residences, resulting in eight deaths, hundreds injured and more than 1,600 arrested so far.
Despite being released the former prime minister continues to face numerous proceedings against you that could lead to your arrest if a court does not extend the bail measure to those other cases.
