Daniel Ortega removed from his post as ambassador to Guatemala the retired general commissioner, Juan Ramón Gámez Morales, who had held the post since January 2022.
According to presidential agreement number 140-2022 published in the official gazette The Gazette, the regime agrees to “annul the appointment of Juan Ramón Gámez, in the position of extraordinary and plenipotentiary ambassador of the Republic of Guatemala.” Ortega did not mention in the document who would replace the retired police officer.

Before Gámez, the position was held by Valdrack Jaentschke Whitaker, husband of the co-director of the Nicaraguan Institute of Tourism (Intur), Anasha Campbell, one of the people who has held the most diplomatic positions in the Ortega government, since the Sandinista leader returned to power in 2007.
Gámez has been a faithful element within the ranks of the regime, graduating at the highest level among commissioners, being awarded several times as a “police expert” and participating in police exchanges through cooperation
Ortega’s recent move was the appointment of a representative in Colombia, despite criticism from his Foreign Ministry, which has been “concerned” about the violent situation in the Central American country due to the repression directed by the State.

Colombian Foreign Minister Álvaro Leyva Durán said that the situation in Nicaragua is “the last straw.
