Organizations defending human rights and politicians in Nicaragua expressed their concern about the state of health of political prisoner Miguel Mendoza, who began a hunger strike demanding to see his eight-year-old daughter Alejandra.
For the entities, a hunger strike “endangers the life” of the sports writer, because the prisoner of conscience is physically impaired and has lost more than 30 pounds of weight since his arrest on June 21, 2021.
Likewise, the relatives of the political prisoner are concerned about his state of health, which could worsen with the beginning of a hunger strike.

The Nicaraguan Center for Human Rights (Cenidh) stressed that more than 20 days ago in a “media show” the regime exhibited Mendoza, where the people of Nicaragua managed to confirm “his deteriorated state of health and his extreme thinness.”
“Today we ask ourselves with terror, how has your physical condition worsened?” questioned the defense organization, alluding to the hunger strike that journalist Miguel Mendoza is carrying out.
“We hold the Ortega Murillo regime and the Directorate of Judicial Assistance responsible for what may happen to it,” he added.
Likewise, the Blue and White National Unit (UNAB) highlighted that in 15 months of confinement, the dictatorship of Daniel Ortega has denied Miguel Mendoza any type of communication with his 8-year-old daughter.
“Miguel Mendoza’s life is in danger. The regime has denied him seeing his daughter for more than a year and at her demand he began a hunger strike », the opposition bloc wrote in Twitter.
The Be Human platform reminded the Ortega regime that the political prisoner has “the right to receive regular visits from his minor daughter.”
In addition, he demanded that the Ortega-Murillo family allow the sportswriter and the other political prisoners to “regularly communicate with their relatives both in Nicaragua and abroad.”
Miguel Mendoza is one of the political prisoners denied the right to see and communicate with his daughter by the Ortega-Murillo regime. The relatives of the prisoner of conscience have requested in different ways that the slightest communication between Miguel and his daughter be authorized, however, the Ortega administration has denied this demand.
The journalist was arrested at his home on June 21, 2021. The regime imprisoned the sports writer for allegedly “conspiring to undermine national integrity” and “spreading false news.” He was sentenced to nine years in prison. In addition, he was disqualified from holding public office.
The first and only time that the Ortega regime showed Miguel Mendoza, the journalist looked thin, emaciated, like the other 26 political prisoners locked up in “El Nuevo Chipote”, but he always kept his head held high.
