The opposition in the Plurinational Legislative Assembly (ALP) denounced this Saturday night that the Movement Toward Socialism (MAS) launched a “legislative coup” with the complicity of defected legislators, for which it decided to install a permanent vigil to prevent this is consolidated.
The announcement was made by legislators from Creemos and Comunidad Ciudadana (CC), after a tense day in the Chamber of Deputies, where it was not possible to advance with the election of the directive, precisely because dissident legislators from both fronts presented plates on the sidelines of those who decided the benches, which were later received by the president of the chamber, Freddy Mamani.
In a joint conference of the two benches, the head of the CC, Óscar Alarcón, warned that “what the MAS intends to do is to disrupt the essence of democracy” by co-opting a small group of “turncoat deputies … who are trying to sell themselves for charges to the MAS ”. He said that this is one more step in the mass project of installing a dictatorship in the country.
“We are going to resist this parliamentary coup that the MAS intends to carry out. We are going to hold a permanent vigil here, in the hemicycle, and all the deputies are going to stay to continue resisting tomorrow, ”added the head of the Creemos bench, José Carlos Gutiérrez.
Later, the head of CC and former president, Carlos Mesa, released a video in which he warned that what “the MAS wants is hegemony and destroy all vestige of opposition.”
“We are not going to allow it and we are not going to allow it because we are tired of tampering, not only in the Chamber of Deputies and the Chamber of Senators, but in the whole of the country,” he added.
The dispute over the positions in the board of directors unleashed a fight between the ruling party and opponents in the Chamber of Deputies this Saturday afternoon. President Freddy Mamani (MAS) accepted four plates presented by legislators from Creemos and Comunidad Ciudadana (CC), among them only one prepared by the two banks together. The others were proposals from dissidents.
The admission unleashed the protest of the benches of these parties, who denounced that with this political move the ruling party wants to take absolute control of the board, including the secretariats that by regulation correspond to minorities.
“President, it is an act of corruption that you are carrying out in this session, because you cannot allow or receive a note presented by three individual deputies who do not represent any bench. It is destroying the democratic institutions of this country by affecting the Legislative Chamber, which is the essence of democracy, ”deputy Alarcón denounced in plenary session.
Then he demanded that Mamani order the secretary of the chamber to “immediately reject those notes, because they cannot constitute a bench of turncoat deputies.”
Article 33 of the regulations of the Chamber of Deputies provides that the second vice-presidency, in addition to the third and fourth secretaries, will correspond to the minority bloc, that is, to the opposition parties.
Between shouts and shoves, the preparatory session for the election of the directors was held, which was finally declared in an intermission until this Sunday morning.
