Ortega takes advantage of a tropical storm to proselytize and attack "neoliberal" governments

Opponents denounce waste of money in Sandinista celebration

The Government of Nicaragua reported this Monday that representatives from 31 countries will be present tomorrow at the celebration of the 43rd anniversary of the popular Sandinista revolution that overthrew dictator Anastasio Somoza Debayle in 1979, an act that is criticized by the Nicaraguan opposition.

The Nicaraguan vice president, Rosario Murillo, said through official media that the largest Sandinista party will be attended by delegates from countries in Africa, America, Asia, and Europe, both from neighboring and distant countries, including Abkhazia or Djibouti.

Representatives from allied countries of Nicaragua, such as Cuba, Russia and Venezuela were also announced.

During the celebration, the Nicaraguan president, Daniel Ortega, will decorate the only president who confirmed his attendance, the Prime Minister of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Ralph Gonsalves, who will receive the “Augusto César Sandino Order” in its highest degree, “Battle of San Jacinto”, according to Murillo, also the first lady.

“Here we are and we say and affirm that it will always be July 19 and that our popular Sandinista revolution, which is a revolution of love, which is a revolution of affection, which is a Christian, socialist, solidarity revolution, goes forward,” Murillo said. .

For their part, at least 20 opposition organizations lamented and rejected the Sandinista celebration, considering that it is “a victory that was usurped, betrayed and turned into the worst historical tragedy.”

According to opposition organizations, which are in Nicaragua and in exile, the Central American country “is experiencing a new dictatorship, as bloody and totalitarian as or more bloody than the Somoza dynasty.”

Among the organizations that rejected the Sandinista party are the Civic Alliance for Justice and Democracy, the Blue and White National Unity, the Campesino Movement, the Political Prisoners Reflection Group, and the Nicaragua Freedom Coalition.

“There is nothing to celebrate, much less the liberation of a people that continues to be assassinated, we do not conceive of a celebration, commemoration or veneration, on a date whose meaning has been trampled on and degraded like the very lives of citizens,” the opponents continued. .

The organizations also demanded “the immediate exit from the criminal dictatorship of the Ortega Murillo family, the release of the more than 190 political prisoners, respect for public liberties, and the safe return of the more than 144,000 exiles.”

Nicaragua is experiencing a sociopolitical crisis that, according to the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR), left at least 355 dead in 2018, which worsened in the elections last November, in which Ortega and Murillo were re-elected with their main rivals in prison. or in exile.

The Government of Nicaragua has not yet reported whether the celebration, which has Ortega’s speech as its center of attention, will be an exclusive televised event, or if there will be a massive presence of Sandinistas, as was the case until the 2018 anti-government uprising.
