Opponents ask the US to approve a TPS that benefits persecuted politicians in Nicaragua

Nicaraguan opponents in the United States are carrying out a virtual campaign to ask the Joe Biden government to create a new Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Nicaraguans seeking refuge in that North American country.

The former politician Medardo Mairena explained to Article 66 that the idea of promoting a new TPS, which would help more than 300,000 Nicaraguan migrants, is so that “each of the people who are politically persecuted can have legal status in the United States.”

He stressed how difficult it has been for many Nicaraguans, exiled in the United States, to be able to prove that they are politically persecuted, because they are not visible faces, “but what better proof is the large number and sea of people who came out to march in 2018, and although they are not familiar faces, the Nicaraguan dictatorship was merciless with each one of them ».

“This is the only way that Nicaraguan migrants can be helped to solve the migration problem and thus be able to reintegrate into society and contribute to the development of this country, because we do not want to be the burden of the diasporas, much less of the State. We want to work and support our families,” she added.

On his Twitter account, the peasant leader took the opportunity to call all Nicaraguans in exile in the US to unite and call “the White House Hotline – 1-888-427-0484 and ask for the redesignation of a new TPS for Nicaragua, for the benefit of all our exiled brothers.

For his part, former presidential candidate Felix Maradiaga He recalled that the sociopolitical crisis that Nicaragua is experiencing at the hands of the Ortega regime has caused a massive exodus of Nicaraguans, for which he assures that he strongly supports the call for Nicaragua to be included in the list of countries designated for Temporary Protected Status ( TPS) in the United States.

TPS benefit

Madariaga explained that the TPS benefit would grant temporary protection and work authorization to Nicaraguans in the United States who cannot return safely to their country of origin due to the resurgence of human rights violations.

He stressed that the situation in Nicaragua has had “a devastating impact” on the population, with the collapse of the health system, shortages of food and medicine, and the deterioration of the educational system, for which he insists that the call for TPS for Nicaragua ” It is not only a question of humanitarian aid and protection, but also a way to support the non-violent resistance of Nicaraguans who seek freedom, peace and stability for our country.

“I am encouraged by the support of legislators, activists and organizations that have advocated for TPS for Nicaragua. We appreciate the support of the Biden Administration to the community of Nicaraguan exiles, but we need more action,” said the exiled politician.

He also called on the Secretary of Homeland Security to recognize the urgency of the situation and take immediate action. “TPS is a humanitarian program that can make a difference in the lives of those who are facing extraordinary circumstances and are unable to return to their country of origin.”

On the other hand, the political scientist indicated that today Tuesday, before Title 42 expires, the situation of Nicaraguan migrants is even more precarious. “This is a call to action. Let us offer solidarity to our most vulnerable brothers and sisters. Please call the White House hotline at 1-888-427-0484 and ask for TPS for Nicaraguans,” he urged.

the opponent Juan Sebastian Chamorro He also joined the request for TPS, urging to demonstrate “that Nicaraguans in the US deserve the same rights as other immigrants, that there must be family unification and that it be legal and safe.”

The opponents agreed that their greatest interest is that the Biden administration help them get out of the Ortega dictatorship, because the objective is to return to the country, to contribute to its reconstruction and that there be justice and democracy.

Since 2018, dozens of Nicaraguans decided to leave the country, due to political persecution by the Nicaraguan regime, which executed against opponents. 2022 was the year of an extensive migratory wave that forced the United States to create measures to prevent more irregular migration, which caused many nationals to perish or be objects of kidnapping and extortion.
