In a movement that marks a milestone in the policy of opening the air market, the Government Nacional of Argentina has announced the authorization of a new international route that will connect Asunción, Paraguay, with the province of Córdoba.
This new route will be operated by the Paraguayan airline Paranair and is added to the three international authorizations granted this week by the Governmentbringing the total to four new international connections in just seven days.
The measure, published in the Official Gazette, is part of the “Open Skies” strategy promoted by the Government National. This policy seeks to promote competitiveness in the airline sector through the entry of new airline companies and the diversification of routes, offering more flight options and competitive rates for passengers.
The new route between Asunción and Córdoba eliminates the need to pass through Buenos Aires, thus facilitating direct access between both cities. This measure is part of a memorandum of understanding signed between Argentina and Paraguay on July 31 of this year, with the aim of expanding air connectivity and meeting the growing demand for seats.
In addition to Paranair, other international airlines have been authorized to operate in Argentina this week. Sky Airline, a Chilean company, now connects Argentina with Brazil and Chile; Arajet, a Dominican airline, offers direct flights between Buenos Aires and Punta Cana, as well as to destinations such as São Paulo, Santiago de Chile and Mexico City; and JetSMART Airlines Perú has begun to link Lima with the Argentine capital.
The announcement of these new routes has been received with enthusiasm by passengers and companies, who see this opening as an opportunity to improve the flight offering and reduce costs. The Transportation Secretariat of the Ministry of Economy has highlighted that competition between airlines usually benefits consumers, since companies are forced to offer better services and lower prices.
Control
However, not all opening experiences have been successful. Flybondi, one of the low-cost airlines enabled under the government of Mauricio Macri, has recently been classified among the worst in the world due to the cancellation of 28 flights in one week.
Despite these challenges, the Government Nacional continues to advance with its plan to completely privatize Aerolíneas Argentinas, seeking to transfer its control to the most competitive bidder in the market.
