Guaranteeing universal access to water is one of the greatest challenges we face, so its conservation and proper management must be a true State policy, said the rector of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), Enrique Graue Wiechers.
He asserted that all efforts aimed at the correct use of water, distribution and conservation must be addressed and encouraged.
When presenting the 2021 Rotoplas-UNAM Foundation Award, he explained that water security is an issue of vital importance and said that according to the UN, one in three people in the world does not have access to drinking water and two out of five do not. They have a basic facility necessary to wash hands with soap and water.
The call for the first edition of the aforementioned award was associated with issues related to good regulatory practices in wastewater treatment, its observance and compliance, as well as treatment and reuse of domestic wastewater on scales of less than 18 cubic meters per day, said Dionisio Meade, president of the Board of Directors of the UNAM Foundation.
Later, the rector Graue Wiechers participated in the award ceremony of the fourth edition of the Bal-UNAM Earth Sciences Prize 2021, where together with Meade, he reiterated the closeness of the highest house of studies with the businessman Alberto Baillères, who passed away last February 2, and his family.
Alberto Baillères was one of the richest men in the country, president of Grupo Bal, a corporation that brings together Industrias Peñoles, Fresnillo plc, Grupo Nacional Provincial, among others. He supported our foundation from its origin. He was really a contributor since its foundation, which is now close to turning 30, and he always contributed with his actions and decisions to give us momentum.

The call for the aforementioned award included mining-metallurgical, oil, environmental geology and social responsibility issues.
