One deceased and three injured by the collision of a truck and a train in Havana

One person died and three others were injured this Friday after the collision between a truck and a train in the Mazorra area, Boyeros municipality, in Havana. According to the official version, published in a note of the Union of Railways of Cuba, the impact occurred when the driver did not stop the vehicle and got in the way of the railway line. The driver of the train, used for transport between the capital and San Antonio de los Baños with the number 2213, did not have time to stop the march.

The accident occurred at 10:40 a.m. near kilometer 13 of the southern line of the capital. The authorities preliminarily determined the responsibility of the driver, identified as Isidro Reyes, who was driving a Hino truck, with license plate B032081. The vehicle belonged to an Agricultural Production Cooperative to which both the deceased and the three injured belonged. The latter were transferred to the National Hospital, where they receive medical care.

The Ministry of the Interior created, says the note, a commission to determine the cause of the crash and pointed out, in addition to Reyes’ responsibility, that there could be other “direct and indirect” responsible for the accident, in addition to “other violations outside the fact “, although he did not specify which ones.

A member of the group Facebook Accidents, Buses & Trucks published a video of the area where the accident occurred in which, under the overturned truck, a man with military pants – which Cuban peasants usually wear – and rubber boots was trapped. In the images, several people approach the body, whose body is unknown if it is unconscious or dead, and discuss how to help it.

Among the comments on the video, the person who filmed it adds that they later moved the truck away but the trapped person had already died. Another user, apparently present at the scene, assured that the rescue group took an hour to reach the scene.

That same day, another person died and two others were injured in a accident car on the Havana-Pinar del Río highway. The vehicle, with private sheet metal, lost control on the bridge that leads to the town of Herradura, in the municipality of Consolación del Sur, and Dainarys Patterson, 37, died after the impact, reported the official press.

Until June 1, 290 people had lost their lives in traffic accidents in Cuba, a figure that the authorities attribute to “the lack of perception in the population of what the risks are.”

Along with Patterson, who lived in Herradura, were two passengers who were injured and are now receiving medical attention at the Abel Santamaría Provincial Hospital. His injuries, assured Manuel Quintero, head of the Guard Corps at this center, are “mild, without compromise for life.”

The Cuban News Agency published several photographs of the accident, in which a notable damage to the body of the vehicle is observed, completely overturned on the road. The car, with license plate P217282, was an American-made vintage car, but its condition did not allow the brand to be identified.
