One dead, two injured in Ukraine troop transport plane crash

A Ukrainian An-26 troop transport plane crashed on Thursday during a “technical flight” in the Zaporizhia region of southeastern Ukraine, killing one person and wounding two, according to the regional administration.

“Today at 09:00 (06:00 GMT), an An-26 belonging to Ukraine crashed in the Mikhailivka district. The plane was carrying out a technical flight,” the regional administration of Zaporizhia, a large city near the river line, announced on Telegram. front with Russian troops.

“We know that there is one dead and two injured,” continues the statement, which specifies that “according to preliminary information not yet confirmed, the plane collided with an electrical tower.”

The Mikhailivka district, where the plane crashed, is located north of Zaporizhia, a few kilometers from the city’s airport.

The Russian army, which invaded Ukraine on February 24, controls a southeastern part of the Zaporizhia region, where the front has stabilized a few tens of kilometers southeast of this industrial city of more than 700,000 inhabitants.

Zaporizhia, the main Ukrainian city still in the hands of kyiv in this part of the country, also became the first stage of the evacuees from Mariúpol, a city besieged for almost 40 days by Russian troops.

The Antonov An-26 is a light transport aircraft designed in Ukraine during the Soviet era. With a length of 24 meters, it can fly at a cruising speed of 440 km/h.
