OFAC fines two mining companies that bought explosives from the Cuban regime

MIAMI, United States. – The Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) of the US Department of the Treasury. ad this Thursday two fines against the companies Newmont Corporation, based in Denver, Colorado, and Chisu International Corporation, based in Parkland, Florida.

Both entities bought explosives of Cuban origin through their subsidiaries. Chisu, in particular, purchased accessories from the Latin American Union of Explosives (ULAEX), a Cuban company.

The “Cuba Trade” website echoed the news this same Thursday and detailed that the two fines, imposed for violations of the american embargo against the Island regime, add up to a total of 187,350 dollars.

With respect to the multinational mining company Newmont Corporation, OFAC ad a fine of $141,442 for four violations of the Cuban Assets Control Regulations (CACR).

“Specifically, between approximately June 2016 and November 2017, Newmont Suriname, a Newmont subsidiary subject to United States jurisdiction under the CACR, purchased Cuban-origin explosives and explosives accessories from a third-party supplier as part of four separate transactions. ”, indicates OFAC.

The entity also indicated that Newmont had voluntarily disclosed the apparent violations, which constitute a “non-serious” case.

On the other hand, OFAC announced another finein this case of $45,908 against Chisu International Corporation, a company located in Parkland, Florida, that is affiliated with a distributor of explosives and accessories for mining operations.

Like Newmont, Chisu agreed to settle civil liability for four violations of the Cuban Assets Control Regulations.

That company and its subsidiaries in Suriname and Panama, between June 2016 and November 2017, acquired explosives of Cuban origin and accessories from the Cuban state-owned Latin American Union of Explosives (ULAEX) on behalf of a US company.

In this case, OFAC indicated that Chisu had not voluntarily disclosed her violations, which also constitute a “non-serious” case.
