The High Level Group formed by the Organization of American States (OAS) to analyze the political crisis in Peru arrived this Sunday in Lima to start Monday with a busy schedule that will include meetings with the three powers of the State and the National Prosecutor among other social sectors.
The former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Paraguay and spokesman for the group, Eladio Loizaga, confirmed to channel N that among those interviewed by the mission will be the National Prosecutor, Patricia Benavides, who opened a preliminary investigation against the Peruvian president, Pedro Castillo, as alleged leader of a criminal organization.
Asked specifically if they are going to meet with the National Prosecutor, Loizaga responded in the affirmative and added that “we are going to meet with everyone.”
Specifically, the mission will meet on Monday with the representatives of the Executive, the Legislative and the Judiciary, and on Tuesday it will meet with various social, political and civil organizations in the country.
As a result of the prosecution’s complaint, the opposition in Congress promotes the vacancy (removal) of Castillo, while the investigations continue to expand the network of alleged accomplices of corruption among the president’s family environment, as well as former ministers and state officials .
CASTLE REQUESTS A VISIT
On October 20, the OAS plenary session agreed to send a mission to Peru to study the political crisis, after President Castillo asked the organization to activate the Inter-American Democratic Charter after considering that a “new type of coup d’état” is being presented. State” against him.
The president made this statement after prosecutor Benavides filed a constitutional complaint against him in Congress as the alleged leader of a criminal organization in the Executive Branch, an accusation that the president rejects.
The full cabinet supports the head of state and one of its main spokespersons, the Minister of Labor, Alejandro Salas, told Radio Nacional that they want to ask the OAS mission to help them strengthen the democratic field in the country.
“Above all that democratic times are respected in Peru. I think that is essential, “said Salas because the opposition has sought the removal of Castillo practically since the beginning of his government (2021-2026).
Salas assured that “on the side of the Executive the arm is extended, we hope that Congress will extend its hand to us as well, that is what we are looking for.”
GREAT EXPECTATION
In a message shared on his social networks, the spokesperson for the OAS mission assured that his visit “has raised great expectations in Peru, that any gesture we make or word we say will be interpreted by someone as a position taken by the group in one sense or another, but nothing could be further from the truth.
The OAS mission is made up of the foreign ministers of Argentina, Santiago Cafiero; from Belize, Eamon Courtenay; from Costa Rica, Arnoldo André; from Ecuador, Juan Carlos Holguin; from Guatemala, Mario Adolfo Búcaro, and from Paraguay, Julio César Arriola, as well as the Vice Minister of Multilateral Affairs of Colombia, Laura Gil.
These, Loizaga pointed out, will be dedicated to listening “to the executive, legislative and judicial powers. To the government and the opposition. To religious, union, business, professional and civil society representatives”.
«We know in advance that we will not have the opportunity to listen to everyone, but we have the firm intention of collecting as many voices as possible and for this reason we will enable the appropriate channels so that those whom we cannot see personally can send us their points of view by email. written,” he added.
The only objective of the visit, he insisted, is to “listen to the Peruvian people”, always respecting the Constitution, sovereignty and the rule of law of the Latin American country.
