Norges Rodríguez speaks of “digital transformation” in the Cuban context

MIAMI, United States.- Journalist Norges Rodríguez, founder and director of the media outlet specializing in technology and society YucaByte, denounced this Wednesday that the Cuban government is extending its control to social networks, where it also violates the most fundamental human rights.

In a thread posted on his social network account Twitter, Rodríguez assured that one cannot speak of “digital transformation” while human rights are being violated on the internet. “Cuban musician Maykel Osorbo, winner of two @LatinGRAMMYs, is in prison, among other things, for posting on Facebook (a meme, a “live” and a post).”

The publications mention his participation in the “Digital Transformation” Working Group, within the framework of the IX Summit of the Americas, in which “I explained that the Cuban regime blocks websites and social networks, cuts off telephone service to some citizens or fines them by Decree 370”.

“The regime violates human rights on the internet, jailing people for posting on Facebook or broadcasting a live video on social networks. Digital rights in Cuba are under the lock of the oldest dictatorship in the hemisphere,” he added.

Rodríguez explained exclusively to CubaNet that in the Digital Transformation working group, “a new concept that is being used a lot now and that is one of the thematic axes of the Summit” he spoke of the importance of making visible what is the true situation of those who use social networks in Cuba.

“This digital transformation has a different meaning in countries with dictatorships, where technologies are used to repress people who dissent and have a different position from their governments,” he said.

“One of the things that I exposed in that working group was the importance of denouncing the violations of digital rights in Cuba, and when I speak of violations of digital rights I refer to the censorship or blocking of internet sites, news sites or civil society organizations.

“It is important that in all these forums human rights violations on the Internet begin to be denounced, because with the change that the world has experienced with respect to these issues, an important part of our lives takes place in cyberspace,” he added.

For Norges, “if you are penalized and imprisoned for what you post on social networks, your right to free expression is being violated in general, and it is important to keep that in mind if you are talking about a country that wants to achieve digital transformation”.
