Non-commercial import of power plants extended in Cuba

The deadline for the import of non-commercial power plants was extended until December 31 of this year, official media on the island reported.

The official Gazette published this Thursday in Extraordinary Edition the Resolution 61/2023 of the Ministry of Finance and Prices that extends this possibility, in accordance with a report of the Cuban News Agency (ACN).

The resolution issued clarifies that the decision has been made after assessing the benefits that the acquisition of power plants through shipments brings to the residential sector, given the contingencies of the national energy system.

The media adds that the regulation allows the import of power plants with a power greater than 900 watts, whose reference value in Customs exceeds the maximum value allowed to be imported by air, sea, postal and courier shipments without a commercial nature .

The regulations now extended are applicable to operations that are presented for clearance by the General Customs of the Republic until December 31, 2023.

This measure was approved in August of last year in the midst of an acute crisis in power generation, marked by continuous breaks in the generating units, as well as difficulties in accessing the necessary fuels.

Although with some improvement in recent times, the complex situation persists that has forced the Government to design a plan of measures that seek to minimize the effect of blackouts, another cause of popular discontent.

The strategy includes the contracting of mobile generating plants and the planning of partial maintenance, which, according to experts, could make it possible to improve generation capacities during the summer months, when demand soars.

Cuba: Customs updates computer application to facilitate imports

Also last August, Cuban Customs released various regulations that made non-commercial imports by natural persons more flexible, as well as modifications to customs rates for air, sea and postal shipments.

These measures seek to alleviate the shortage of products that the Cuban population also suffers, victim of a long-standing economic crisis aggravated by the impact of the pandemic, the intensification of the US embargo/blockade and the little impact achieved by a set of measures adopted by the Government.
