Nicaragua’s new representative in the OAS insults the body when presenting credentials

Nicaragua’s new representative to the Organization of American States, Orlando Tardencilla, presented his credentials to the regional organization this Friday with a note full of insults in which he calls the organization an “instrument of the North American empire.”

Tardencilla was recently appointed as permanent representative of the OAS through an agreement published on April 4, replacing Francisco Campbell Hooker, who lasted just 12 days in office.

Before Hooker, Arturo McFields was in charge, who caused an international earthquake after turn against the government of President Daniel Ortega, whom he denounced for human rights violations, the condition of political prisoners and the closure of dozens of non-governmental organizations in Nicaragua.

Tardencilla, a former Sandinista guerrilla, was a deputy before the Central American Parliament (Parlacen). He was subsequently appointed as ambassador to the United Nations (UN) in December 2021.

The new representative assured in the letter, published on the official website The 19 Digital, that the organization has become “a sad instrument of aggression by the United States Government, which converted it into what would be known as the US Ministry of Colonies.”

“They were left behind [sic] to its own shame its first article, which expressly highlights, the Organization of American States has no powers other than those expressly conferred by this Charter, none of whose provisions authorizes it to intervene in matters of the internal jurisdiction of the Member States ”, can be read in the letter.

Nicaragua is in a process to leave the OAS from November 2021, after the body issued a statement, supported by several of its member states, where it said that the elections in Managua on the 7th of that month they were neither fair nor free.

The process to withdraw from the forum would take at least 24 months.

Attacks that “do not represent the Nicaraguan people”

According to Nicaraguan opponents consulted by the voice of americathe government measure is an example of the isolation in which it finds itself after the “electoral farce” that took place on November 7, where Ortega was imposed for a new mandate five years old, along with his wife, Vice President Rosario Murillo.

Prior to these elections, Ortega, through the justice system he controls, imprisoned at least six presidential candidates who to date have been sentenced to several years in prison.

“These attacks, such as the ambassador appointed by the regime, do not represent the feelings or the perceptions of the Nicaraguan people. It is a shame that representatives of a State as is the case, give such opprobrious statements and so lacking in styles that are used in international diplomacy”, he told VOA Alexa Zamora, member of the opposition Blue and White National Unity.

“Far from showing political will, the regime makes a show of its lack of professionalism but of knowledge and respect before international instances,” concluded the opponent who is in exile.

For his part Arturo McFields it was pronounced on his Twitter account about the new appointment.

“The OAS receives ex-guerrilla Orlando Tardencilla today with a red carpet, forgetting the 181 political prisoners, 355 dead and 170,000 exiles. The democracies of Latin America cannot remain silent,” criticized the former official.
