Nicaraguan opponents: "A dictatorship cannot occupy the General Secretariat of SICA"

12 organizations opposed to the Nicaraguan regime rejected the fact that the Ortega government occupies the General Secretariat of the Central American Integration System (SICA).

The signatory opposition groups, among which are the Blue and White National Unity (Unab), the Civic Alliance for Justice and Democracy (ACJD) and the Reflection Group for Political Prisoners (Grex), called on the presidents of member countries of SICA not to allow a representative of the regime to assume the General Secretariat of that organization.

They pointed out that it is “unacceptable that a representative of an illegitimate government accused of crimes against humanity, which has violated the nature, purpose and purposes of SICA established in the Tegucigalpa Protocol, can even be considered a candidate for that position.”

Another of the arguments to reject that Nicaragua occupy the secretariat of SICA is that “Ortega has violated the reason for being of SICA, beginning with its fundamental objective: To constitute Central America as a region of peace, freedom, democracy and development.”

bad precedent

They also warned the countries that make up the Central American Integration System that favoring the Nicaraguan regime “would be setting a bad precedent by allowing a candidate proposed by a country that clearly violates the founding principles of SICA to be accepted.”

“It has also attacked the Esquipulas agreements to maintain peace in the region and in turn stands as a threat to it,” they stressed.

Regarding the entry of Russian troops into the country, the opposition emphasized that Ortega has produced a fundamental imbalance in the region, threatening the security of its neighbors, “so that SICA should not be led by the representative of a regime that violates human rights.” that has destroyed both democratic institutions and the rule of law in the country; and does not comply with the basic right of suffrage, imprisoning opposition presidential candidates in degrading and inhumane conditions.”

“The Nicaraguan organizations considered that the acceptance of the one designated by Ortega would be a slap in the face to the European countries who are the main cooperators of SICA and those that have imposed sanctions against the regime, including its vice president, for human rights violations, How will these countries react to seeing a representative of a criminal and illegitimate regime sit in the secretary general’s chair?

As for who will occupy the secretariat of SICA, the signatory organizations suggest appointing an interim administrator to continue the operation of SICA, “until free, fair, transparent and observed elections are held in Nicaragua, in accordance with the resolution of the OAS, that they give the country a framework of legality».
