NGO VE Sin Filter registered in 2021 censorship and the second slowest connection in the region

The VE Sin Filter report points out that there are attacks by the State on those VPN tools, used to evade censorship

The NGO VE Sin Filter produced a report with data collected during the year 2021 in which he evidenced censorship of various digital media in our country, as well as on portals belonging to other non-governmental organizations for their political positions that, in the opinion of the researchers, they have against the administration of Nicolás Maduro.

In this sense, VE Sin Filter verified that more than 56 relevant domains for the electoral campaign corresponding to the November 21 elections were blocked.

Similarly, it indicates that from January to December of that year, 59 websites were blocked, corresponding to at least 68 blocked domains; of which 45 are to the media, eight to portals with political content, four to share multimedia content, three from human rights organizations, six pages with adult themes and two VPN platform domains.

One of the things detected by this NGO is the blocking of the alternative domains of portals such as La Patilla, Caraota Digital, Alberto News; as well as pages such as Access to Justice and the NGO Mi Convive.

“Pseudo-legal strategies were observed to intimidate or force the removal of content, a technique that had hardly been seen in Venezuela before 2021. This modality includes requesting the removal of content or suspension of service to critical providers and online platforms for alleged copyright violations, which turn out to be false; they also include legal threats without merit, “says the report.

It also points out that “anti-censorship” tools, such as VPN (Virtual Private Network) programs or portals, are one of the objectives to be blocked by Cantv; where Tunnel Bear and Psiphon are the most affected by this mechanism.

For VE Sin Filter, Tor is a tool that provides this service and revealed that, after an investigation, there is an increase in the number of bridges and directories of authority inaccessible from the state telephone company. National operators, according to the NGO’s statistics, between 70% and 80% of the authorities of the directories of this VPN are likely to be blocked at any time by Cantv.

They also detected that in Venezuela there is the second slowest connection in the entire region and one of the slowest in the world. Data taken from Ookla by Ve Sin Filter describes that «the average download speed during 2021 was between 3.34 and 7.21 Mbps, this is the speed to view web pages and consume content online. The upload rate was between 0.74 and 2.41 Mbps, which is what we use to upload a video to the Internet, appear in a videoconference or similar cases.
