New York jury finds Donald Trump guilty of sexual abuse and defamation

A New York jury has found that Donald Trump sexually abused journalist E. Jean Carroll in a New York department store 27 years ago.

This verdict adds to Trump’s growing legal problems. Last month he pleaded not guilty to 34 criminal charges of falsifying business records for paying underhanded money to porn actress Stormy Daniels during the 2016 presidential election.

Trump could also face criminal charges for his attempts to falsify the result of the presidential election in Georgia.

And he is the subject of a federal investigation into his actions during the 2020 presidential election and its aftermath, including storming the Capitol and storing secret documents at his Mar-a-Lago property.

“Donald Trump raped me,” journalist E. Jean Carroll told the jury

The jury, made up of three women and six men, was swayed by Carroll’s testimony over three days as she described the sexual assault in the locker room of a New York department store in 1996.

The jury deliberated for less than three hours.

The verdict for the first time legally qualifies a former US president as a sexual predator. But since this is the result of a civil case and not a criminal one, the only legal penalty Trump will face is a financial one: he will have to pay Carroll about $5 million.
