New fire in Rapa Nui affects Papa Vaka area

This afternoon, a new fire was reported on the Island of Rapa Nui, specifically in the Papa Vaka sector.

The news was confirmed by firefighters in the area, who arrived at the scene to stop the advance of the fire. They also had the support of personnel from the National Emergency Office (Onemi), who contacted Conaf to combat the incident.

In any case, this was not necessary, since the aforementioned emergency officials managed to quickly control the flames, minimizing the damage. It should be noted that this week, at least 104 hectares and 30 moais ended up with irreparable damage after the two forest fires that occurred on the island.

In this regard, the mayor of the area, Pedro Pablo Edmunds, indicated that the flames caused “incalculable damage.” In addition, he stated that “it is known that 99% of the time fires are intentional.”
