New anti-doping test method officially debuts at Beijing Winter Olympics

China participated in the development of an innovative anti-doping test method that can detect banned substances in dried blood, which will officially debut at the Beijing Winter Olympics, the Chinese anti-doping body announced.

The dry blood spot (DBS) test, which was used at the Tokyo Olympics last year for testing, only takes a few drops of blood from the athlete’s finger to blot on absorbent paper. , and with which technicians can analyze certain substances.

According to Chen Zhiyu, director of the China Anti-Doping Agency (CHINADA), the new method was developed with international efforts and has great potential to help the anti-doping fight.

“The DBS was jointly developed by the International Olympic Committee, the World Anti-Doping Agency, the International Testing Agency and CHINADA, as well as USADA and others,” Chen said.

“It is the first time that China has participated in the whole process of an innovative project in the anti-doping field,” he added.

China carried out more than 400 DBS tests before the Tokyo Olympics and applied this method at last year’s National Games held in Shaanxi province.

“We have carried out more than 300 DBS tests on our athletes who will participate in the Beijing Winter Olympics during the preparations for this world event,” the official added.
