Negotiations with ELN would be a deception for the country: Peace Commissioner

From Medellín, the High Commissioner for Peace, Juan Camilo Restrepo Gómez, rejected any type of political negotiations between the State and the ELN, after the trip of delegates from the government of President-elect Gustavo Petro to Cuba, to hold talks with members of the guerrilla group.

The official was against said meeting because he assured that the guerrilla group “It is no longer an organization with a political purpose, but a drug cartel.”

Meanwhile, he insisted that a negotiation with the ELN would be a deception for Colombians. Furthermore, he highlighted that It is not possible to speak of massive subjugation, so the road with this guerrilla could be long.

“Public opinion has been told that full peace will be quick, as if that were quick. Those who say that it will be fast and dynamic, it makes it more clear that they do not know the organized armed groups from the inside”, held.

On the other hand, Commissioner Restrepo assured that this Tuesday he will go to the Second Commission of the Senate, where he will present the documentation of the law, which They support the inconvenience that the possible start of talks with the ELN has for him.

“Legislative Act 02 of 2019, which is in the Constitution, stipulates that there is no connection between political crime and drug trafficking crime, therefore we ratify that it is neither appropriate nor proper to engage in political negotiations between organized armed groups and the State. That cannot be allowed because it would be a hoax.”he highlighted.
