After learning about the fact, the defense warned that this could complicate his state of health and put his life at risk for not receiving adequate hospital care.
The firm Arce López Abogados, which is in charge of the former official’s legal defense, assured that since his admission to the North Prison in August 2022, the former attorney has been transferred to different public hospitals, including: the “Ignacio Chávez” Cardiology Hospital, the General de Xoco, among others, given the complication that he has presented due to his conditions.
“Last week Mr. Murillo Karam He was diagnosed with COVID-19, which put his health in an even more vulnerable position due to the diseases he suffers from, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), systemic arterial hypertension, and cerebral vascular insufficiency. As of today, he has a blood pressure of 190/100,” read a press release.
The office recalled that due to his state of health and his condition as an elderly person, a change in the precautionary measure was requested so that the former official in the administration of Enrique Peña Nieto can leave the northern prison and continue his criminal proceedings at his home.
“Last December 6, the defense challenged the determination of the control judge who, inexplicably due to the medical evidence that was presented, denied the change of precautionary measure so that attorney Murillo Karam could continue his process at home,” he stressed.
Murillo Karam was arrested in August 2022 at his home located in Lomas de Chapultepec, accused by the FGR for the crimes of torture and forced disappearance of persons in the investigation into the disappearance of 43 normalistas from Ayotzinapa.
Federal judge Marco Antonio Fuerte Tapia linked the former official to the process and ordered the precautionary measure of preventive detention in the North Prison.
Last September, Murillo Karam was transferred to the Balbuena hospital for medical examination, later on October 20, he was taken to the Ignacio Chávez National Institute of Cardiology to undergo surgery with an emergency surgery called high-risk Carotid Endarterectomy.
