More than 60% of Cubans approve the Family Code, says the regime

MIAMI, United States.- The popular consultation process of the Family Code project in Cuba, developed between February and April, obtained just over 60% approval, said this Saturday Alina Balseiro Gutiérrez, president of the National Electoral Commission, during the fifth extraordinary session of the National Assembly of People’s Power

According to a note from the official Cubadebatemore than six million Cubans participated in the process, in which 336,595 interventions by voters were registered, and 434,000 proposals were collected.

Balseiro Gutiérrez assured that the electoral body continues to process the proposals derived from the meetings, so these results are preliminary. However, 61.96% of the opinions were in favor of the Family Code project, he pointed out.

According to the official report, the issues that generated the most proposals among Cubans were marriage, parental responsibility, adoption, surrogacy, discrimination and violence in the family, the right of childhood and adolescence in the family. and assisted affiliation.

“We are sure that the results of this process will allow the drafting commission to present to the National Assembly of People’s Power a new version of the Family Code project, enriched with proposals from all sectors of Cuban society,” said the official.

For his part, Oscar Manuel Silveira Martínez, Minister of Justice, explained that all the criteria on the articles of the project will be re-examined. The new version will be presented at the end of June to the National Assembly.

“We will work in depth observing the results of the popular consultation,” he said.

Doubts about the process

Last April, the Special Electoral Commission, established in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MINREX) of Cuba, reported that it had concluded the consultation of the Family Code among the staff of their embassies and other missions abroad.

According to a tweet from the Foreign Minister of the Cuban regime, Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla, 26,740 voters participated in the consultation and 14,665 interventions and 13,191 proposals were counted.

For its part, last week the DemoAmlat Legislative Observatory of Cuba called “attention to the lack of transparency in what the regime recognizes as a participatory process,” referring to the Family Code and the new Penal Code.

The observatory denounced that for the government of Havana this process “is reduced to the issuance of comments and/or recommendations on the project that may or may not later be incorporated according to parameters that are unknown up to now.”
