More than 400 people isolated after heavy rains in Mayarí, Holguín

MIAMI, United States. – After heavy rainfall in the region of Arroyo Seco, municipality of Mayarí, Holguinmore than 400 people residing in six communities were isolated, confirmed this Sunday the official newspaper Granma.

The bridge at the spillway of the Mayarí dam, located 40 kilometers from the municipal center, collapsed due to the intense rains of the last week, which did not cause damage to people, homes or social facilities in the nearby settlement.

In accordance with Granmathe Vice Prime Minister of the Cuban regime Inés María Chapman, accompanied by the provincial and municipal political and governmental authorities, reviewed this Sunday the alternatives to assist the more than 400 people currently incommunicado.

In a telephone communication with Ernesto Santiesteban Velázquez, secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC) in Holguín, the ruler Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez expressed his concern about the outlook, according to the Telecristal channel.

“Bermúdez expressed his concern for the inhabitants in a state of isolation and inquired about the decisions adopted to find a solution to the problem,” Telecristal said.

The municipality of Sagua de Tánamo was also affected by the flooding of the river, which impacted low-lying areas and flooded homes. For this reason, the Municipal Defense Council, in coordination with the Civil Defense, activated the evacuation of residents from these areas.

In the Juan Díaz valley, the El Cedrito area has been one of the most damaged, an area that regularly suffers flooding during natural events. “This flood has been the fifth since 1993 that has caused these effects,” he said. Granma.

Although no major material damage is reported, food production will be significantly affected, with more than 100 hectares of crops such as corn, vegetables and root vegetables damaged by the floods, the official media added.

The report concludes by noting that the population is safe, with seven active evacuation centers and two more to protect people from low-lying areas.
