Monteiro’s defeat decrees Germany’s victory over Brazil in the Davis Cup

It didn’t work for Brazil in the confrontation against Germany, in the qualifying phase of the Davis Cup World Group, the main team tournament in men’s tennis. This Saturday (5), at the Barra da Tijuca Olympic Park, in the west of Rio de Janeiro, Ceará’s Thiago Monteiro, number 114 in the Professional Tennis Association (ATP) ranking, lost to Alexander Zverev, third in the world, for two sets to zero, with partials of 6/1 and 7/5, in one hour and 36 minutes.Monteiro's defeat decrees Germany's victory over Brazil in the Davis Cup

The victory was the third for the Germans in the best of five matches (four singles and one doubles). With that, the Europeans advance to the Davis group stage in September, alongside 15 more countries. Brazil will have to play in the World Group repechage, also in September, needing to win to stay in the tennis elite. The Brazilians have not passed the qualifying stage since 2001, with Gustavo Kuerten and Fernando Meligeni still on the team.

Zverev didn’t take long to take control of the game, acting aggressively and forcing Monteiro to defend himself. The German broke the Brazilian’s service in the fourth game. In the sixth, the Ceará native even saved a first break point, but could not resist the pressure from the European, who needed only 34 minutes to close the opening set at 6/1.

The second set was even. Monteiro managed to attack better, especially when he landed the first serve. The crowd erupted in the Olympic Park, taunting Zverev when he recalled being sent off at the ATP 500 in Acapulco (Mexico) for almost attacking a referee. The Ceará native had a set point in the opponent’s service, who reacted and closed the tenth game. The German’s answer followed, breaking the Brazilian’s serve and then closing the partial at 7/5, in one hour and two minutes, deciding the match in favor of the visitors.
