Monkeypox: confirm a new suspected case in Paraguay

Paraguay currently remains a country free of monkeypox. To date, there is one suspected case that is under study, and another six have been ruled out through laboratory studies.

During the press conference this Friday, Dr. Guillermo Sequera, director of Health Surveillance, recalled that today the epidemiological alert for monkeypox is maintained.

Cases of the disease have been detected in all South American countries, with Paraguay being the exception as it does not have a single case officially reported.

Sequera mentioned that this week began with three suspected cases discarded, which drew the attention of the health authorities who continue to carry out permanent surveillance.

“I am afraid that people are not going to consult. There are high suspicions that it is circulating in our country,” he stated.

So far, the Central Health Laboratory has ruled out six cases and one suspected case is under study. The results of the analyzes are expected to be available today.

Sequera recalled that monkeypox lesions can be similar to sores or herpes and appear in various parts of the body, including the mouth or genitals, causing great pain. Even a single eczema may appear on the entire body.

He urges the general public that, in case of presenting some conspicuous skin lesions, they can go to see a doctor, in order to rule out whether or not it is the disease.
