Monkeypox cases increase to 235 in Panama

The Department of Epidemiology of the Ministry of Health (Minsa) reports that three (3) new cases of monkeypox are confirmed, which increases to 235 confirmed cases accumulated as of May 26, of which 89 cases were during the year 2022 and 146 cases so far in 2023.

Of the 235 accumulated cases, 6 patients are active (5 in home isolation and 1 in a health facility), while 229 people ended their isolation without major setbacks.
At the moment, only one (1) death remains, due to monkeypox.

The accumulated cases have resulted positive 233 men and 2 women and the distribution of the cases, remain in the age range between 19 to 59 years.
For its part, the Expanded Immunization Program (PAI) reports that, until May 23, 1,489 doses of the monkeypox vaccine have been applied, with 1,073 first doses and 416 second doses.

The Minsa reiterates that people who are direct contacts and with HIV can be vaccinated to counteract the progression of the disease.

The accumulated cases have resulted positive 233 men and 2 women; and the distribution of cases, remain in the age range between 19 to 59 years.
That is why MINSA emphasizes that prevention is the most efficient weapon to avoid contagion with this disease.

The corregimientos with the most confirmed cases are: Bella Vista with; San Francisco; Calidonia or The Exhibition; Bethany; Juan Diaz and Tocumen; New Town, Lefevre Park, Río Abajo; Chilibre, Vista Alegre and Arnulfo Arias Madrid.

Since last May 24, 2022, Panama has maintained a health alert throughout the country and epidemiological surveillance has been redoubled in all health regions and all points of entry into the national territory.

MINSA recalls that maintaining healthy lifestyles and avoiding contact with people who are carriers of the virus is vital to counteract the spread of this disease.
