Modesto Montoya: Peru is semi-devastated as a result of the constitution with which we live

The Minister of the Environment, Modesto Montoyasupported the president’s announcement peter castle on consult the citizens if they agree with a new political constitution in the municipal and regional elections 2022.

In statements to TV Peru, Montoya asserted that the president “is not imposing anything” and that the Parliament will be the entity that will define whether or not a popular consultation proceeds in the next elections.

“President Pedro Castillo is not imposing anything, he is simply proposing an interesting debate to Congress and Congress, which is the representation of the people, is going to decide. It is a very intelligent way, it seems to me, of placing the country’s important issues at the heart of the national debate,” he said.

The head of the Minam avoided commenting on the tweet of the president of the Legislative, Maria del Carmen Alvawho said that the head of state “forgets that the country’s priorities are the fight against insecurity (security in emergency), unemployment and corruption.”

“It is an approach, I don’t know if it will be constitutional or unconstitutional, Congress will decide that. But the important thing is that the consequences of poverty, violence, citizen insecurity, contamination throughout Peru —as Minister of the Environment I have confirmed that Peru is semi-devastated—, mines that have abandoned environmental liabilities, communities that are drinking toxic water; all this is a product of the constitution that we are living”, he added.
