Contagios de covid-19 a la baja en Nicaragua

Minsa: Covid-19 infections are down for a month

The number of infections, confirmed by the Nicaraguan Ministry of Health (Minsa), registered a new drop for the fourth consecutive week. The weekly report, released this Tuesday, refers that from October 19 to 26, 398 new confirmed infections by covid-19 were counted, 106 less than the previous week.

The decrease in new infections has marked a trend after five months in which official data registered a weekly increase. However, the number of weekly infections remains comparable to the contagion reports of last August, when some of the highest peaks of the pandemic were recorded.

“From the beginning of the pandemic to the present day, we have attended and monitored 12,866 people responsibly and carefully,” the report indicates.

The Minsa details that the patients “have had associated conditions such as: arterial hypertension, diabetes mellitus, obesity, heart disease, immunodeficiency syndrome, chronic kidney failure, a history of stroke, pulmonary tuberculosis and chronic lung diseases.”

Deaths from covid-19 remain frozen at one per week

The number of deaths from covid-19 remains frozen at one per week at the national level for more than a year.

During this week, from October 19 to 26, the Minsa insisted that there was only “one deceased attributable to covid-19.” However, they highlighted that there were “other deaths in people who have been under follow-up, due to pulmonary thromboembolism, diabetes mellitus, acute myocardial infarction, hypertensive crisis and bacterial pneumonia”, although they did not indicate how much this type of death amounted to.

Since the pandemic began, in March 2020, until this October 26, the Minsa has only registered 208 deaths attributable to covid-19, of which 55 were counted in one each week in the last year.

The official figures, released by the Minsa, are totally different from the independent monitoring carried out by the Citizen Observatory, which until October 20 reported and verified 5,887 deaths from pneumonia or those suspected of covid-19.

It should be noted that the Citizen Observatory reports have also reflected, in the last four weeks, decreases in the number of deaths and infections. Between October 14 and 20, 55 new deaths were recorded due to suspicions of covid-19, registering a 49% decrease in relation to the previous week. Regarding new infections, according to independent monitoring, there was also a decrease of 57%, since in that period 224 new suspected cases were counted.

Independent monitoring warns that, although there is a downward trend, “we must not lower our guard and we must continue to take the strictest preventive measures.”
