Minminas asked countries to ‘decrease their economic models’

This Thursday began in Cartagena the National Mining Congress, that brings together members of the public and private sectors to give strategic conversations around the sector.

(Mining would leave some $8 billion to Colombia this 2022).

Among the guests participating in the event is the Minister of Mines and Energy, Irene Vélezas well as President Gustavo Petro who will be at the closing ceremony.

During one of the meeting panels, the Minister of Mines and Energy assured that “We need to demand that other countries begin to decrease in their economic models. It also depends on this that we achieve a balance and that the impacts of climate change affect us less“.

According to what was indicated by Vélez, who was accompanied by the Minambiente, Susana Muhamad, the foregoing would allow less minerals, both metallic and non-metallic, which Colombia currently exports.

(More than 82% of the Minminas budget would be to pay subsidies).

This statement by the Minminas received several criticisms from political and opinion leaders mainly on Twitter, who disagreed with it.

For his part, José Obdulio Gaviria wrote that: “We heard from the Colombian Minminas the neo-Marxist concept of Jesse Chacón, applied in Venezuela: a development plan of ‘degrowth to overcome dependence on oil’. ‘Economic degrowth’, he said. Downgrade the consumerist appetite of countries that buy minerals from us”.
