Ministers will apologize for saying that rapes of Awajún girls are a “cultural practice”

The indigenous leaders Romer Orrego and Raquel Caicat indicated that on June 28, the Ministers of Education and Women will arrive in the province of Condorcanqui, to personally apologize to the Awajún community. This after the minister stated that the rapes of minors in the province of Condorcanqui, in the Amazonas region, would be a “cultural practice”, and the head of Women, Ángela Hernández, supported it.

Yesterday the representatives of the Ministers of Education and Women apologized for their comments in a meeting with representatives of various indigenous communities of Amazonas. However, these apologies have not been made publicly, which is why they have made a general call with all the relevant authorities for June 28 and the apologies can be public.

“In 2022, the UGEL Condorcanqui fire occurred. We have to find out, get serious about this situation (because) more than 2,500 files have been burned where there were cases of sexual violence, harassment, abandonment of position, embezzlement,” said Romer Orrego.

Since 2014, an average of 2,500 cases of sexual abuse against schoolchildren, psychological and physical abuse, and abandonment of positions, allegedly committed by teachers, have been recorded. However, after the fire only 400 cases were rescued.
