The Minister of Justice and Human Rights, Jose Tellowas presented this Thursday, December 15, before the plenary session of Congress to support the bill presented by the Executive to advance the general elections.
Tello Alfaro considered that if the elections are held in 2024, political reforms could be carried out, but if they are brought forward to 2023, this would not be possible. In this sense, he indicated that ultimately it is Parliament that has to make this decision.
“We have to make an invocation that the corresponding decision be taken in the national Parliament. We have the legislative initiative, but ultimately the ones who have to make the decisions are you the parliamentarians. The only thing to be clear is that you have to listen to the feeling of the street“said the minister.
“With a small margin of additional time, elections to 2024, political reforms could be had. If the elections are in 2023, that definitely could not happen beyond the constitutional reform of early elections”, he added.
In this way, the head of the Ministry of Justice and Human Rights proposed two scenarios for the general elections: April 2024 or December 2023 with some reforms.
cost of elections
In the same plenary session, the head of the National Office of Electoral Processes (ONPE), Piero Corvetto estimated that the next general elections would cost S/ 1,500 million, taking into account the primary elections, as well as the first and second rounds.
“Approximately the elections with three electoral days, primaries, first round and second round, should be around S/1,500 million”, he explained in plenary session of Parliament.
