Minister of Interior and Police urges provincial governors to join in working for citizen security

Ministra de Interior y Policía insta gobernadoras provinciales a sumarse a trabajar por la seguridad ciudadana

SANTO DOMINGO.– The Minister of the Interior and Police, Faride Raful, held a meeting with the governors to urge them to join in working for a culture of peace and citizen security.

The meeting is part of the strategic guidelines implemented by the head of the MIP, in compliance with the directives of President Luis Abinader to promote peaceful coexistence and contribute to the reduction of social conflict.

The official informed the provincial governors that they must follow up on the Citizen Security, Citizenship and Gender roundtables because they are priority spaces for President Luis Abinader and the Ministry of the Interior and Police.

Raful invited the governors to embrace the initiatives promoted by the Executive Branch in matters of citizen security and to work together with churches and neighborhood associations to more effectively identify local problems that may affect the tranquility of the population.

He explained to the representatives of the Executive Branch in the 31 provinces of the country that, as a way of maintaining security and social tranquility and reducing the incidence of crime, thievery and other crimes, the government, through the MIP, with inter-institutional support, is developing “Operation Peace Guarantee” which began in Greater Santo Domingo and other provinces and will be implemented nationwide.

He explained that the joint effort made by the Alcoholic Beverage Control Directorate (COBA) with the participation of agents from the National Police, the Air and Navy Forces, the Army of the Dominican Republic, the National Drug Control Directorate (DNCD) and other institutions resulted in the closure of more than 20 businesses selling alcoholic beverages.

Another issue discussed with the governors was their budget management and compliance with internal and external control standards, for which he assured them they would always have the support of the Interior Ministry and the Police.

Minister Faride Raful was accompanied by the Vice Ministers of Internal Security, Edwin Feliz; of Preventive Security in Provincial Governments, Angela Jaquez; of Citizen Coexistence, Antonio Palma Larancuent; of Preventive Security in Vulnerable Sectors, Chandrai Estévez and departmental directors.
