Ministers discuss the transformation of the education systemduring the XIV Ordinary Meeting of the General Assembly of the Organization of Ibero-American States for Education, Science and Culture (OEI).
The meeting has the participation of representatives of 23 Ibero-American countries.
The Dominican Minister of Education, Ángel Hernándezacts as host of the meeting, since the Dominican Republic is the country that currently holds the presidency of the Board of Directors of the organization.
During the opening ceremony, Minister Hernández thanked all the participants for their presence, while urging those present to reaffirm their commitment to promote work that produces the fruits that are expected to benefit the entire educational community in the region. In addition, Hernández wished to strengthen the OEI as a mechanism for Ibero-American integration.
Mariano Jabonero, Secretary General of the OEI, recalled, on the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, which is commemorated this November 25, the Mirabal sisters, brutally murdered in the Dominican Republic in 1960 during the dictatorship of Rafael Leonidas Trujillo.
The inauguration of the act also had the virtual participation of the presidents Pedro Sánchez, of Spain; Alberto Fernández, from Argentina; Miguel Díaz-Canel, from Cuba, and Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, from Portugal, who, through video messages, were present at the venue of the meeting and expressed the support of their governments for the development of the agreements and goals that, at the Ibero-American level, through the OEI, are set in terms of educational, scientific and cultural cooperation.
The letter of support from Pope Francis was also read, with whom the Secretary General held a meeting at the Holy See on November 14.
Accountability
During the conference, the institutional memory 2019-2022 was presented, which accounts for the cooperative activity of the organization in those years.
The psychologist and expert in education Howard Gardner from Harvard University shared his conference “Multiple Intelligences and the Synthetic Mind” with the members of the Assembly.
In this assembly, the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP), the Central American Integration System (SICA) and the EU-LAC Foundation will be ratified as associated entities of the OEI. The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), Unesco, the Development Bank of Latin America (CAF), the Ibero-American General Secretariat (Segib) and the International Youth Organization (OIJ) participate as observers.
The OEI General Assembly is made up of official delegations from its 23 member states, which make up the Ibero-American Community of Nations: Andorra, Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Ecuador, El Salvador, Spain, Guatemala , Equatorial Guinea, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Portugal, Dominican Republic, Uruguay and Venezuela.
