Minister Muñoz anticipates that they plan to unfreeze public transport fares next year

With the aim of “contributing to fiscal responsibility” and ensuring that the focus is also to implement changes in regions, the Minister of Transport Juan Carlos Muñoz revealed that the Government of President Gabriel Boric plans to unfreeze public transport fares; Fixed since 2019.

In interview with The MercuryMinister Muñoz explained that “all these measures require subsidies that are relevant, that also have many other possibilities where they can be implemented and, therefore, the Government’s commitment is that it will agree on the frozen rate until the end of the year and from next year we assume that we are going to have to enter another phase of rate normalization, in order to also contribute to fiscal responsibility”.

One of the measures referred to by the current head of Transport is that “within the next month or two” the Government will advance with electromobility in regions. “There are some tenders that are underway, in which we hope to soon be able to announce that we are going to have electric transport services in regions,” Juan Carlos Muñoz told the morning newspaper.

On April 7, the Minister of Finance, Mario Marcel, announced that public transport rates would be maintained at the national level, after it was announced that the Panel of Experts recommended an increase of 30 pesos; the first since October 2019 prior to the start of the social outbreak.

It should be remembered that on October 1, 2019, the Transport portfolio of the previous government decreed an increase for the Alameda-Nos Central Metro and Train services during peak and off-peak hours. Said determination detonated two weeks of massive evasions on the subway led by high school students, who were later also joined by older citizens.
