“It is a remarkable experience of improvement and effort, because we are facing an institution that allows many people who did not finish secondary education to do so,” emphasized the head of National Defense, Javier García, this Thursday 7, after touring the facilities of the High school of the Military Institute of Weapons and Specialties of the Army, in which 175 people are studying this year.
The Secretary of State made the visit accompanied by the Commander in Chief of the Army, Gerardo Fregossi, and informed that the students belong to the ranks of junior personnel of that branch, the Navy and the Air Force. He added that 60% live in Montevideo.
García revealed, in an interview with Presidential Communication, that the classes from first to sixth of secondary school are taught for three months, in double schedule and with a quota of 35 students per classroom. This period is due to the fact that those who attend participate in peace missions or reside in the interior of the country.
“The initiative is a good example of the value of overcoming and the effort of wanting to go further,” stressed the hierarch, who also valued the role played by teachers and assistants, whose remuneration is often less than what they could receive in education. public.
He also specified that, since 2001, some 2,500 troops have attended this headquarters, which houses eight training schools in different areas and the Equestrian Rehabilitation Center, which serves more than 1,000 Uruguayans.
The complex was created on June 20, 1918, as the Army Shooting School and in 1936 its name changed to the Service Arms School. In 1999 it was reorganized and received the name it maintains to this day.
There are five first-level schools and three second-level schools, according to recently approved regulations: Training and Improvement of Senior Army Weapons Personnel, Training and Improvement of Subordinate Army Weapons Personnel, Physical Education and Army Shooting, Horseback Riding of the Army, and Army Specialties, which, in turn, brings together those of Army Musicians, Army Intelligence and Military Administration.
