Exception status
When asked about the implementation of the state of exception for the north of Chile – part of the petition from the truckers’ union – the Secretary of State indicated that the decree will be submitted to the Comptroller’s Office during the afternoon.
“As was the commitment on Saturday, our task today during this day is to send the signed decree to the comptroller’s office, which obviously has a term of surely a couple of days to be able to take reason, which is a term that they will define,” he detailed.
“Once that happens, the state of exception begins at the same time, as happened for example in the South Macrozone. The measures, as requested by the union community and as defined by this government is to strengthen the work on the border,” he added.
According to the authority, the idea is to “complement what is already being done between the police and the Armed Forces. There is decree 265 that allows collaboration in the northern macrozone, but with a focus on drug and migrant trafficking, but it is punished rather to the person who is being a coyote. This strengthening is going to increase capacity.”
Finally, he explained that the decree will allow “to patrol the same routes, strengthen the checkpoints also for the people who are transiting there. Therefore, the defense chiefs of each of the regions will have the powers and have already had meetings to coordinate actions.
