The Caravelí Court, in Arequipa, issued 18 months of preventive detention for the 17 people investigated for the clashes that occurred on June 2 in the Caravelí mines, where 14 people died due to the land dispute in a sector known as Huanaquita.
This measure comes after the Prosecutor’s Office carried out proceedings in the framework of the ongoing investigation for the alleged commission of the crimes of criminal organization, qualified homicide, serious injuries, manufacturing, supply or possession of hazardous materials and hazardous waste.
The Prosecutor’s Office has been investigating the alleged existence of a criminal organization, which would have hired people, to violently evict artisanal miners from the area.
There are three groups (Calpa Renace Association, Atico Calpa and the mining company Intigold Mining SA), which would have been disputing the territory of the Calpa area, in Caravelí, reported the Public Ministry.
14 dead
Regarding the 14 bodies found, seven people were found in the place known as Catarata, in Atico, which is located within the Intigold Mining mining concession. The rest were located on June 2 in the area called Huanaquita.
The provincial prosecutor, Wilfredo Rigabi Sánchez Vera, went to the place of Catarata, along with the medical examiner, specialized personnel from the National Police of Peru, and High Mountain, to remove the bodies.
