Migratory talks between Cuba and the United States resume in Washington DC

This Wednesday the United States and Cuba will sit down at the table again to continue discussing the application of the migration agreements in force since 1984. The meeting will take place in Washington DC during the day, announced on Monday the official US broadcaster Radio Martí citing an unidentified State Department official.

These talks represent “a continuation of our long commitment with Cuba on migration issues, as neighboring states, and are limited to the issue of migration,” the source pointed out.

“Ensuring safe, orderly, humane, and regular migration between Cuba and the United States remains a primary interest of the United States, consistent with our interest in fostering family reunification and promoting greater respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms in Cuba. Cuba,” he stressed.

In the last meeting on the subject, which took place in Havana last November, Washington stated that it sought to engage in “constructive talks with the Government of Cuba”, highlighted the areas of successful cooperation on migration, and identified the “problems that have hindered compliance” with the agreements between the two countries on migration, the station said.

Last January, the Biden administration included Cuba in a low-income program parole for Nicaraguans, Haitians and Cubans (Venezuelans already had theirs since last year) that so far has brought some 14,000 Cubans to the United States with sponsors for two years.

The authorities have warned that people who try to enter the country illegally, either by land or by sea, and are caught, will be disqualified from applying for those immigration benefits.
