Migration crisis: 3,370 Cubans intercepted at sea in less than three months

MADRID, Spain.- Since October 1, 2022, the beginning of the fiscal year, to date, the crews of the United States Coast Guard (USCG) have intercepted 3,370 Cubans who were trying to reach the northern country.

In this short period, the figure represents more than half of the rafters detained during the past fiscal year, in which the USCG detained 6,182 Cuban migrants.

These data were shared by the immigration authorities this Wednesday through a release.

The information also specifies that on December 14, the crews of the Coast Guard Margaret Norvell and Raymond Evans repatriated 162 Cubans to the island, after eleven operations near the coast of Florida.

The arrests, which occurred between last Saturday and this Monday, took place about 30 miles south of Key Colony Beach, west of Cay Sal, Bahamas, about 10 miles south of Key West, 1 mile south of Snake Creek, about 20 miles south of Indian Key, about 20 miles south of Big Pine Key, about 25 miles south of Bahia Honda, about 15 miles south of Lower Matecumbe Key, about 5 miles south from Key Colony, about 30 miles south of Big Pine Key, and about 10 miles south of Marquesas Key.

In the statement, Lt. Matthew Miller, Coast Guard District Seven, insisted as the entity’s teams and those of partner agencies continue to patrol and stop illegal migration by sea to the United States.

Just as he recalled that migrants intercepted at sea will be repatriated to their country of origin or departure.
