A group of socialist deputies announced that they would formally request the central committee of the PS that the former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights lead a unitary list of opposition forces.
Deputy Daniel Manouchehri noted that she forms tremendous leadership “and has a lot to contribute in this historic process that will begin.”
According to Manouchehri, the former president stated his availability to lead an eventual pact, if there is a single list among the government parties. That would be her condition to be a candidate for constitutional counselor.
Just like the definition of going on a single list, Michelle Bachelet’s decision is not yet confirmed. For this reason, figures of socialism such as the Minister Secretary General of the Presidency, Ana Lya Uriarte, were cautious in commenting on the matter: “since I was your minister and then chief of staff of your government, I have been very respectful of what the former president want to say or do. I do not know that there is a public definition, therefore I cannot take responsibility for what is known, ”she said.
For his part, the Minister of Housing and Urbanism, Carlos Montes, added that “after having been president twice, she has to define very well what steps she is taking. If she is indeed considering it, it would be a great thing for Chile to have a single list and for President Bachelet to be part of that process. But she can do it in different ways, not just by being a candidate. The most important thing is that we need unity, a lot of generosity, a lot of vision of the country with a historical perspective”.
Likewise, the president of the PS, Paulina Vodanovic, affirmed that they are working to achieve maximum unity. “We are playing for the unity of all the progressive forces, we are going to fight until the last minute, we want to be able to have a list from the DC to the PC, that we again rebuild that ancient alliance for this historic moment. It seems to us that today the maximum unity is necessary to confront the extreme right, the conservative forces that do not want there to be changes.
