MIAMI, United States. — The city of Miami approved this Thursday the construction of Miami Freedom Park, a sports complex that will serve as the headquarters for the Inter Miami soccer club of Major League Soccer (MLS).
A report of The New Herald indicates that the authorities approved the work after a “historic vote” of 4-1. The project only found opposition in commissioner Manolo Reyes.
“Many people wanted it, what you want to achieve is not impossible. Tonight is a night for you, for the fans, for our supporters, and most importantly, for the city. Tonight we won,” Cuban-American businessman Jorge Mas, the main promoter of the project, told the press.
Miami Freedom Park will feature a 25,000-seat stadium, a 750-room hotel, a shopping mall and offices, community fields and a 23-hectare open-access public park, making it a new public park for the city .
The total cost of the project will oscillate between 300 and 350 million dollars, all by private investors.
According to The New Herald, the works will have space in the golf course Melreese Country Club. There will be a 99-year lease on the 52-hectare land, which will include a minimum rent of $4.3 million annually, as well as about $40 million in property taxes.
“Inspiration for all young people“
Inter Miami CF indicated in a release that the new stadium “will serve as an inspiration for all the young people and the next generation of stars in South Florida.”
“Miami Freedom Park will be a place of unity through sports,” said the institution.
While the Miami Freedom Park is being built, the club, which has former English soccer player David Beckham among its owners, will continue to play its home games at the DRV PNK Stadiumfrom the city of Fort Lauderdale.
