Mexico rules out economic retaliation against Russia

The Mexican president affirmed that, according to the Mexican diplomatic tradition, he will promote ending the conflict through dialogue.

Although he also clarified that so far he has not spoken with Vladimir Putin or Volodymyr Zelenski, leaders of Russia and Ukraine, respectively.

“We do not interfere. It is very clear, we are against the invasions of Russia, China, the United States. No invasions, we have already established our position in the United Nations Security Council,” he reiterated.

He added that his government manages that humanitarian aid reaches Ukraine through the United Nations. “We cannot fall into a leading role that has nothing to do with the restraint that should prevail in foreign policy,” he indicated.

He stated that his administration will support all citizens of the world who ask for help.

“Mexico is a fraternal country where the persecuted, the refugees are cared for, protected, and we will continue to do so. But in the economic matter, we cannot close our territory to anyone,” he insisted.

He noted that he is against censorship on Twitter of Russian media outlets and of any country.

“There are complaints that whoever has an opinion on this conflict and considers it favorable to Russia is crossed out or put a legend on his (Twitter) account. That is censorship,” said the president, who asked the company to investigate this type of cases.

Early last Thursday, Russian troops invaded Ukraine supported by tanks and bombing, by order of Russian President Vladimir Putin, an action that has been rejected by a large majority of countries, which have already imposed sanctions.

López Obrador has condemned the Russian invasion of Ukraine and has called for an end to the attacks, but has emphasized that he would also do so with other countries, citing on several occasions the invasions that Mexico suffered during the conquest of Spain, and the troops of United States and France in the 19th century.
