Senators, academics and officials warned about the need to make a common front in the fight against global warming, since Mexico is highly vulnerable to climate change.

The declaration of drought that was presented this year in the northern zone indicates that there are very strong environmental problems in the region, which can trigger social conflicts, warned Agustín Ávila Romero, general coordinator of the Center for Education and Training for Sustainable Development, of the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, (Semarnat).

For this reason, he added, it is necessary to work jointly between the different levels of government and closely with the academy. According to indicators from the National Atlas of Climate Vulnerability, in the different municipalities and states of the country there are important changes to the climate, he stressed.

During the virtual forum The academy and the Senate in action against climate change, Jaime Valls Esponda, executive secretary general of the National Association of Universities and Institutions of Higher Education, pointed out that the fight against this phenomenon is not a merely technical discussion, but that puts the viability of nations and societies at stake.

I affirm that a proactive agenda must be promoted to achieve the goals of reducing carbon dioxide emissions.

The former presidential candidate of the PRI, José Antonio Meade, representative of the Global Commission for Adaptation to Climate Change, agreed and recognized that Mexican legislation has advanced with measures they are going in the right direction .

In turn, the governor of Nuevo León, Samuel García Sepúlveda, stressed that three months ago the entity experienced the worst water crisis in history and stressed that although now there is guaranteed water in the tap, it should not be forgotten that the liquid is finite It rains less and less and it is scientifically proven that in the Northeast each year rainfall will decrease by 10 or 15 percent.

The organizer of the forum, Raúl Bolaños Cacho Cué, PVEM senator and president of the Environment Commission, called for closing ranks in the fight because If we don’t take action now, what is at risk is our possible extinction as a human species. Authorities, legislators and civil society must join forces in the face of an imminent crisis, since there is no planet b or second option, we have to get to work.
