Mexico donated 8,000 mobile capture devices to the National Office of Statistics and Information of Cuba (Onei) to collect information in the population and housing census and other programs, official sources reported this Saturday.
A press release from Onei states that the National Institute of Statistics and Geography of Mexico made the donation that arrived on Friday by air as part of the cooperation between both institutions.
«These devices (handheld computers that capture statistical data) will be used in the development of the Population and Housing Census in the country, as well as in other statistical investigations, which will make it possible to have a novel method of capturing information for these purposes. » adds the information.
The deputy head of Onei, Juan Carlos Alfonso, thanked “the will and solidarity gesture of the brother country” and also stressed the importance of collaboration with the Mexican organization.
These actions have been taking place for years in the context of the biennial international cooperation programs of the Statistical Conference of the Americas, a subsidiary body of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean, according to the note.
Likewise, they are part of the bilateral agreement to develop a statistical information program “in the fields of training, dissemination and technical and technological support, as well as the strengthening of technical and methodological capacities.”
Cuba had planned to carry out a population census last year, but postponed it due to “lack of the necessary conditions,” authorities said at the time.
Cuba adds three years of population decline, according to experts
The last censuses carried out in Cuba took place in 2002 and 2012, the latter inquiring about the quantity and territorial distribution of the population, its composition by sex and age, skin color, educational level, employment situation, and marital or marital status.
It also collected indicators related to the total and type of homes and families, the number of homes, their effects and equipment.
The definitive result of this process reported that Cuba had 11,167,325 inhabitants on that date, compared to the 11,177,743 recorded in 2002.
