(EFE).- The Government of Mexico returned 22 Cuban migrants this Friday and with them the number of returnees in 2023 rises to 2,623 as part of the migration agreements in force with several countries in the region, reported the Ministry of the Interior.
The returned Cubans – 11 men and the same number of women – left Cuba legally for countries in the area and then joined the transit of irregular routes in order to reach the United States, the note indicated.
This is the fifth operation with which Mexico returns Cubans to the Island by air since the beginning of 2023, and with this group there are already 254 Cubans repatriated from the North American country.
In recent days, other groups of irregular migrants have been deported by the authorities of the Bahamas (128) and the United States (41).
In addition to the Bahamas and the United States, migrants from the Cayman Islands and the Dominican Republic have also been deported to Cuba so far this year
The Government of Cuba affirms that it maintains its commitment “with a regular, safe and orderly migration” and insists on “the danger and risk conditions for life that illegal departures from the country by sea represent.”
In addition to the Bahamas and the US, migrants from the Cayman Islands, the Dominican Republic and Mexico have also been deported to Cuba so far this year.
In the case of the United States, since October 1 – which marks the beginning of the current fiscal year – the US Coast Guard crews have intercepted more than 5,740 Cubans, a high number compared to previous years.
At the beginning of 2023, the Washington administration implemented a policy to welcome 30,000 migrants per month from Venezuela, Haiti, Cuba and Nicaragua.
In parallel, it will immediately expel migrants from those countries who try to cross the southern border into its territory irregularly to Mexico.
Mexico, for its part, agreed to admit 30,000 migrants a month who are expelled from US territory.
