Mexico answers a third round of questions from the US on energy issues

Without offering further details, Undersecretary Encinas said that, together with the energy sector, two solution proposals were built “that seem to us quite serious, tangible; which are in accordance with our legal framework and, from our point of view, can ultimately resolve two of the four blocks of these consultations”.

For now they are specifying details on what and how they would apply these solutions.

Encinas Nájera denied that the energy issue is going to be used to negotiate the part of the rules of origin of the automotive sector. “It’s a separate issue, you don’t have to mix it up,” she said.

Renewable energy

Secretary Buenrostro commented that Mexico is working on the generation of renewable energy in the north and south of the country.

With regard to the south-southeast, in addition to the interoceanic corridor and the Mayan Train, 10 industrial parks of between 200 and 400 hectares are being worked on, four of which will be destined for the generation of wind energy. “That area is known for strong winds,” he said while noting that Sener is already doing the relevant work.

In more than the industrial parks, Buenrostro explained that the business plan is being worked on, but it is contemplated that they will be auctioned, in order to attract investment and employment for the south of the country.

On the issue of green energy generation, there is great interest in Plan Sonora, where “one of the largest solar farms there can be” is being projected, he said.

He advanced, “in the future it is intended to integrate the value chain, from the extraction of lithium, the creation of materials and the assembly of electromobility vehicles.”
