Premiered by the Teatro de la Utopía ensemble in the western province of Pinar del Río, the piece is part of the calendar of actions organized with the Todos sociocultural project, led by the island’s filmmaker Marilyn Solaya, within the framework of the commemoration of the International Day of the woman.
The staging connects with the creator’s legacy, the protagonist of a convulsive personal and professional career and who stands out as one of the forerunners of feminism and a fervent defender of political causes.
Montes articulates in her interpretation the events that marked Kahlo’s life, under the script of the group’s director, Reinaldo León and taking as reference the wide selection of materials: films, diaries, photos, notes, songs, that document her life.
According to the Cubaescena portal, the work combines different significant systems, with the use of symbols and icons that nuance the presentation and complete the discourse of the piece, from the text, movements, scenery, makeup, costumes and lighting.
FK: Fantasia sobre Frida Kahlo has a poetics that facilitates a careful scenic composition where the discourse-image has dialogic breaths, the text points out, as it evokes the thought of the painter, capable of capturing her reality in paintings.
The work also becomes the starting point for the activities developed by the Todos project, in order to make visible the role of women in Cuban society and at the same time promote a greater representation of them in stigmatized spheres, such as cinema.
First stage of the activities of the initiative in the largest of the Antilles, Pinar del Río adds in the organization of the event the support of the Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba, the Council of Performing Arts, the Office of the Historian of the city , among other.
According to León, the cultural day also brings together the exhibition Todos: In search of a space, which includes dozens of photographs that document various women’s congresses, marches and activities carried out by them in the first half of the 20th century.
Similarly, it includes the presentation of the homonymous documentary, released in Cuba in 2019, which demonstrates the premise of the project dedicated to the rescue of female historical memory.
In Solaya’s words, this initiative aims to approach communities far from urban areas, in order to promote a change in the perception of gender roles and part of the idea of reflecting the constant struggle of each woman to occupy a decent place in the society.
